Do I really need to copyright my manuscript?

This is a question frequently asked by authors. Under international law copyright protection is an automatic right. so technically you would be right in thinking that you don't need to officially protect your work. However, what if someone was to dispute the fact that your toiled-over manuscript is actually yours? How would you go about proving that you actually wrote the manuscript yourself?

Better to be safe than sorry ... copyrighting your manuscript

Particularly if you think your manuscript has, or may have, a commercial value then it may well be worth considering registering your manuscript with a company that specialises in this field. Should a dispute later arise over the authorship of the manuscript, you will have documentary evidence supporting your claim of being the rightful creator of the manuscript.

AuthorCopyright.co.uk is one such website that offers an online authors' copyright registration service.
